Every so often we will post reminders about personal safety. This is one of those reminders.
This is a reminder to all members to be careful with your private information.
At mischiefmanaged.boards.net we strive to maintain a family-friendly site and a welcoming atmosphere. Another of our top goals is the safety of our users, not only navigating our own site but the Internet as a whole.
We do not give out the personal information of our users to anyone under any circumstances. Please do not give personal information to anyone requesting it of you. Rule number two of our forum guidelines states:
2.) Do not give out any personal information, such as addresses and telephone numbers.
and it should also be extended to the site as a whole. Though we would like to think that everyone's intentions are good and honest, we cannot assume that anyone's motives are pure when they post topics or send emails asking users for their telephone numbers, addresses, pictures, or for any other reason. There are an alarming number of people who use the Internet as a means to prey on others, and as many of the users of our site are minors, we can not and will not tolerate this at harrypotterfanfiction.com.
The most important thing to remember is that when you’re online in any kind of a public forum, you’re out in public and anyone can read whatever you post. You should never post anything on the Internet that you wouldn’t want known to the public at large. You should also remember that people you meet in cyberspace might not be who they seem to be. If you’re in any type of public forum, avoid giving out your full name, your mailing address, your telephone number, the name of your school, or any other information that could help someone determine your actual identity. The same applies to your family and friends. Never reveal anything about other people that could possibly get them into trouble. The biggest danger to your safety is if you get together with someone you “meet” online. Remember, you never know for certain if people you meet online are who they say they are. So please be aware, should anyone send you an email, post a review to your story or submit a topic in the forums asking you to give them a call and send them a letter, money, a picture, or whatever it may be, please, report it to a member of the staff immediately.
As stated in the rules of the site, anyone asking for or giving personal information will be banned from the site.
The following rules are taken from safekids.com
Kids' Rules for Online Safety
1. I will not give out personal information such as my address, telephone number, parents' work address/telephone number, or the name and location of my school without my parents' permission.
2. I will tell my parents right away if I come across any information that makes me feel uncomfortable.
3. I will never agree to get together with someone I "meet" online without first checking with my parents. If my parents agree to the meeting, I will be sure that it is in a public place and bring my mother or father along.
4. I will never send a person my picture or anything else without first checking with my parents.
5. I will not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make me feel uncomfortable. It is not my fault if I get a message like that. If I do I will tell my parents right away so that they can contact the service provider.
6. I will talk with my parents so that we can set up rules for going online. We will decide upon the time of day that I can be online, the length of time I can be online and appropriate areas for me to visit. I will not access other areas or break these rules without their permission.
7. I will not give out my Internet password to anyone (even my best friends) other than my parents.
8. I will check with my parents before downloading or installing software or doing anything that could possibly hurt our computer or jeopardize my family's privacy
9. I will be a good online citizen and not do anything that hurts other people or is against the law.
10. I will help my parents understand how to have fun and learn things online and teach them things about the Internet, computers and other technology.
